solving (or preventing) industrial tile, resin, sheet goods floor problems

recognizing industrial TILE, EPOXY, URETHANE, POLYASPARTIC RESIN, OR SHEET GOODS FLOORING problems is your first step

  • Polyurethane screeds or epoxies are cheap to install. Installers will use more fillers to slope toward the drains.

These materials are VERY porous to begin with, and become more porous with time. Water carries blood, fat, and other organics INTO the epoxy and polyurethane. These organics then decay and produce the odour you smell.

If a food processing room smells, it likely is not from the walls or ceiling. The smell likely originates from the epoxy or polyurethane floor.

Consequently, sanitation of what is ON the floor is a temporary measure. The bacterial count and the odour will return.

  • The number one issue we receive calls is peeling epoxy and polyurethane floors, with water / organics underneath.

Applicators will try to overlay another layer on top of the failed section, and that will never work.

We help clients start-over in their plant, section by section, weekend by weekend, shutdown by shutdown.

SureBond has the tools to remove ALL resins from your floor. We can remove 9 - 12 mm in a single pass, safely with no dust in the air.

  • The drain is usually the high point in the room, unfortunately.

Or, clients move into a flat floor, multi use facility, but they need sloping to new drains.

SureBond has the tools and materials to slope to existing drains, or new drain installations.

Our sloping material Silikal® R17 is second to none for sloping.

Sometimes we remove concrete with our unique tools to achieve that sloping or to remove humps in the floor.

The use of cheap, porous materials for sloping leads to disaster.

Call us for a sloping evaluation and strategy.

  • Our experience:

    1) EVERY drain in a slab leaks. It could leak into the ground water. Or, it could leak onto processing areas below. The latter is an extremely serious situation.

    2) ALL caulking around drains, will cause leaks and fails. Caulking never seals around drains.

SureBond can successfully and permanently seal around drains using Silikal® floor systems around drains using to prevent these situations from occurring.

  • SureBond defines caulking as an activity that is done just-in-time before a CFIA / Supplier audit. Caulking never lasts.

SureBond can eliminate the need for floor caulking with Silikal® flexible joint fillers coupled with a Silikal® floor.

SureBond can replace vertical caulking in insulated panel walls and kerb joints with Silikal® resin materials as well.

  • This is the Number 1 problem that paralyzes clients. They had a budget in building their facility, and “finishes” such as flooring happen at the end.

They are now operating, and now reality hits, and they do not know how they are going to fix their flooring problems.

SureBond can help figure out how to take a big problem, and reduce it so several small problems that are then solvable.

    That is the Engineering way!

  • A floor failure is when you cannot clean your floor, and not necessarily when it peels.

Swabbing a floor hours later, and you have a bacterial re-bound? That re-bound is coming from inside your floor.

Save water, labour, and chemicals with a Silikal® floor by SureBond.

You will not need to power wash our floor and use excessive amounts of sanitation chemicals on a Silikal® floor.

  • Audit findings may leave clients wondering “how” and “when” can this be done while minimizing downtime. Let SureBond provide the options, and written action item response to the Auditor, and implementation timeline.

  • Painted lines on contaminated concrete do not last longer than safety audits.

SureBond is able to permanently lay “Visual Factory” lines on top of our Silikal® floors that are non-slip, colour coded, and permanent. The colours can transcend language barriers to provide both personnel and food safety.

  • Improper migration of food sanitation squeegees, brushes, and processing tools from one part of the plant to another can lead to food cross-contamination events.

Colour coding of all tools and the use of Shadow Boards in processing areas helps minimize that risk.

SureBond has gone a step further, by introducing colour hygienic zone de-marcations on our floors in between the different hygienic zones of the plant.

  • Exposed aggregate allows easier ingress of water, grease, and fat. Failed slabs increase forklift maintenance costs.

SureBond can fix exposed aggregate slabs permanently. Our Silikal® R17 concrete coupled with the Silikal® R61 system is excellent for high forklift traffic. It keeps the food safety auditors happy, too!

  • SureBond can permanently clad and bond to concrete kerbs in food plants. We also can permanently eliminate caulking by using SILIKAL® resins to cove between walls and kerb. We can even cove vertically!

  • Stairs are a special slip and fall situation. We can install our same non slip resin surface on stairs, for interior and exterior applications.

Epoxy resins are typically too slippery, and do not fare well in outdoor environments. Temperature fluctuations and extremes of +45C slab and -40C slab temperatures cause epoxies to peel and fail.

  • A client told us that in BC, a slip and fall can be $3.5k to $50k-$60k. An Ontario potential client told us he had a slip and fall in the US that cost his firm $300k.

In another jurisdiction, OH&S personnel now visit a plant monthly due to one slip and fall. That one slip and fall seems to warrant entry at-will / with reason.

A slip and fall / injury can result in subsequent provincial OH&S visits.

We have solutions that can quickly solve these types of problems.

  • Restaurant / BOH / Commissaries are slippery places to work. And, the tiles and grout do not last forever.

What colour should you grout kitchen brick tiles? Answer: black. That is the colour they will become due to entrapment of grease in the grout.

Water / organics also penetrate into the grout, and under the tile.

The result is grout cleaning issues at the beginning, then tile de-lamination failure, and finally deep contamination into the slab ….especially near fry lines.

SureBond eliminates the grouting / re-grouting cost…by eliminating tiles forever. We eliminate your tile maintenance costs forever.

Our major chain restaurant client never wants to see tile and grout failures, as well as slips and falls, ever again! We help them every step of the way.

  • Wondering how you can fix concrete inside a “live” freezer at -25C?

Concrete fails in the temperature transition zone from -25 C to +5C or higher temperatures. Doorways are susceptible to this type of failure. We use SILIKAL® R17 materials to help in this transition.

SureBond has successfully repaired concrete at -25C with NO heat added for curing in Live food environments. Back in full service in about 5 hours or so.

  • Epoxy or polyurethane “roughening” is not surface prep. We have the ability to DEMOLISH your failed epoxy - polyurethane back to concrete. We “start over”, including removal of glue, mastic, and polymer cements. We have the tools to remove bulk materials AND perform surface preparation to accept a new resin flooring system or any other floor finish.

We can even remove red brick tile and thick grout!

This food plant tried to repair the polyurethane with an overlay.

Peeling Epoxy / Poly-Urethane Failures quickly occur when another “coat” is added on top of an already failing resin layer. Surface Prep, Surface Prep, Surface will remove all layers so that a new, “fit for long term use” MMA system can be properly applied.

This robotic dairy needs a hygienic floor underneath the equipment.

Organic Ingress Failure / Black Mold Contamination

This thin epoxy is not fit for use in this meat plant.

Thin epoxy paint that was not “fit for use” for this meat processing application. As a result, there is water leakage below grade and under the epoxy. This creates a food safety issue.

This polyurethane floor cannot be repaired. It must be demolished, surface prepared, sloped and a new hygienic floor installed.

Water Pooling / Polyurethane floors that cannot be cleaned / Contaminated sloping materials

Pin hole leaks around caulking can lead to organic ingress.

Caulking Failure starts with shrinkage away from the concrete, or even a simple pin-hole. Organic materials (blood, meat, other) go on a one-way trip under the caulking. This produces the mold that you can never stop growing. The best solution is a floor “fit for long term use”, and not caulking. Caulking is a band-aid used just before food -safety audits.

Forklift damage to kerbs and walls can allow rodents to enter.

Repairs to forklift damage are needed to the kerb and walls to prevent rodent entry and habitation. SureBond has created a novel, permanent solution for this problem.
